Who is Pietra Dawn Cherniak?
PEOPLE identifies Cherniak as a model and reports that she met Billy Bob Thornton outside a Los Angeles restaurant in 1992. They married the following year. Thornton was already an established working actor, but his breakthrough as the writer, director and star of Sling Blade was still ahead of him.
The couple had two sons in quick succession. William Langston Thornton was born on June 27, 1993, and Harry James Thornton followed on June 19, 1994. Harry later worked behind the scenes in television, appeared on E!’s Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules in 2022 and entered luxury real estate; William has maintained a considerably lower public profile.
Cherniak’s own Realtor.com biography says she was born in Santa Monica, raised in Pacific Palisades and spent much of her youth surfing and riding horses around Malibu. That is useful first-person information, but the exact birth date routinely copied by celebrity sites deserves more caution. A contemporary Associated Press report described her as 27 in late 1997; although February 9, 1970 is widely repeated online, I found no comparably authoritative public record independently establishing that exact date.
Reliable reporting is similarly thin on her parents, siblings and formal education. Those gaps are preferable to filling a biography with family details reproduced from unsourced celebrity databases.
The 1997 split came at the height of the Sling Blade story
The timing explains why Cherniak’s name became much more widely known. Thornton won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sling Blade in 1997, with Cherniak accompanying him during that awards season. Shortly afterward, she filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
The separation then became a serious legal dispute. In April 1997, Cherniak obtained a temporary restraining order and alleged physical and mental abuse. Thornton publicly denied her allegations, saying their marriage had not been perfect but rejecting the conduct she described. The dispute continued. A civil complaint filed on September 10, 1997 alleged that Thornton had stalked and assaulted Cherniak during their marriage. Calling Pietra Dawn Cherniak simply a “Playboy model” misses an important piece of chronology. She was already described as a model before the divorce, but her best-documented Playboy pictorial appeared afterward, in the January 1998 U.S. issue.
The six-page feature, photographed by Stephen Wayda, was titled “Sling Babe” and ran on pages 90–95. IMDb’s publication records confirm the issue and photographer.
More significantly, contemporary Associated Press coverage reported Cherniak saying that the shoot was intended to help draw attention to domestic abuse. That context is frequently lost on modern biography sites, which tend to use “Playboy model” as little more than a celebrity label.
From hostile court filings to cooperative co-parenting
The public record becomes unexpectedly different a few years later. In a 2003 Playboy interview conducted by journalist David Sheff, Thornton described Cherniak as one of his closest friends at that time. He said their sons spent substantial time at both parents’ homes and that he and Cherniak even took the children to SeaWorld together.
When the interviewer directly raised Cherniak’s earlier choking allegation, Thornton said the case had been resolved and reiterated that the two had become close. That statement is Thornton’s account, not an independent determination about the 1997 allegations, but it does document a major change in how he publicly characterized their relationship.
There is also photographic evidence of the later family arrangement. On October 7, 2004, Cherniak and sons William and Harry attended Thornton’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony alongside Thornton, his then-partner Connie Angland and their baby daughter Bella.
Cherniak did not completely disappear from public events immediately afterward, either. Getty’s archives document appearances including the Matando Cabos premiere in Hollywood in August 2005 and The Celestine Prophecy premiere in May 2006.

The clearest independently verifiable information about Cherniak’s more recent working life comes not from celebrity media but from the State of California.
California Department of Real Estate records list Pietra Dawn Thornton, license number 02134660, as a real-estate salesperson. Her license was issued on July 7, 2021. The record shows affiliations with Pinnacle Estate Properties in 2021, Pritchett Realty Corp from December 2021 to February 2023, and Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage from May 2023 until December 30, 2024.
Her Realtor.com profile describes work with buyers, sellers, leases, relocation, homes and land across Malibu and other Southern California communities. A 2022 property record also identifies Pietra Thornton, using the same state license number, as the listing agent on a North Hollywood land sale.
There is, however, an important current-status correction. Realtor.com still displays a Coldwell Banker affiliation, but California’s official database says the Coldwell relationship ended in December 2024. The license itself expired on July 6, 2025, with no current responsible broker listed and no disciplinary action shown as of the state’s June 5, 2026 record. The state database is the stronger source for license status.
What is Pietra Dawn Cherniak doing today?
As of 2026, it would be misleading to state that Cherniak is currently an active California real-estate agent without qualification. Her real-estate career is documented, but the official license record available in 2026 lists the credential as expired. The same restraint is warranted for her private life. There is no reliable recent reporting reviewed here confirming a current husband or partner, and online estimates of Pietra Dawn Cherniak’s net worth are not backed by financial disclosures or other credible evidence.
What can be documented is more interesting than the speculative versions.
